Upgrading My Gas Pizza Oven with Electronic Controls – Anyone Tried This?

Hi all,

I've been using my gas pizza oven for a while now and love the results, but lately I've been thinking about tweaking it a bit. I'm curious if anyone here has experimented with adding any electronic components to improve temperature control or automate parts of the process?

My idea is to integrate a more precise temp sensor and maybe a small control board to regulate the gas flow for better consistency, especially during longer bakes.

Has anyone here modded their gas or propane oven this way? I'd love to hear about:
If it's actually worth the effort compared to manual control

Looking forward to hearing your experiences or ideas!

Thanks and happy baking.

I've seen setups where a PID controller is paired with a solenoid valve to control gas flow but the key is choosing components rated for high temp outdoor use. You'll need to match the sensor type with the controller and calibrate carefully to avoid temp overshoot. Are you planning to keep the manual controls as backup or go fully electronic? Also, does your current burner have an adjustable regulator that you'd replace or modify?

Man, modding a gas oven with electronics is like putting a touchscreen on a cast iron skillet. Half the fun is manual control, automation just kills the soul of real pizza-making.

Getting a digital thermostat and auto valve can make your temps stay put, but you gotta set them up right to be safe. But yeah, it might end up like a lab pizza, losing the true soul of handmade pizza-making.

I completely agree, there's definitely something special about keeping it manual, it's really part of the magic.

For accurate temp readings, try a Type K thermocouple or a high-temp IR sensor. For smoother control, go with a modulating gas valve instead of a basic on/off one. A PID controller with a display can make monitoring and tweaks easier.

Thanks for this. I'm trying to build a setup that's smart but still newbie-friendly. How tricky is the calibration part for someone without an engineering background? And if I go this route, would I still be able to manually adjust temps in case something glitches?

I haven't personally gone as far as adding electronic gas flow control (mostly because of the safety concerns with modifying propane systems), but I have experimented with better temperature monitoring. A high-temp K-type thermocouple hooked to a digital readout gave me way more confidence than the built-in dial gauge — the difference in accuracy was night and day.

That's interesting! Does anyone know what brand to get for a digital thermostat and other components I might need? I am also planning to set up mine.
