I recently relocated to central alabama and have been hunting for a store bought sausage that tastes like the kind used on classic pizza. Ive tried Johnsonville and a few local italian sausages from fresh market but none have that familiar pizza flavor. Back home in the northeast the sausage on pizza had a distinct taste maybe it wasn't even traditional Italian sausage? Any suggestions for a ready made sausage raw or cooked thats close to what pizzerias commonly use?

I like getting Italian sausage from the local butcher or market. I mix in fennel and a little cayenne pepper to give it a bit of a bite. If you want good flavor, it's much better than the precooked stuff. Have you ever found Fontanini sausage? It can be hard to find, but it's worth it

Sounds like you want to kick it up a notch. Grab any brand and mix in extra pizza seasoning, think more fennel or anise seeds, chili flakes and paprika to taste. Let it sit overnight in the fridge for the best flavor. If you're not into making your own, try checking with local butcher shops for their homemade blends, at least thats what i do.

If you're able to get to a larger city nearby, you might find an Italian specialty market that has something closer to what you're used to from the Northeast.
I'd also give their suggestions here a try!
